“A creative mess is better than tidy idleness.”
All the stuff that didn’t fit in another category. Mainly sewing related crafts; embroidery, leather and rope-work. But there are a couple other one-offs as well.
My longest running unfinished object. An embroidered medieval cloak.
close-up of embroidery from the cloak
A "sailors bottle" covered in rope-work. The rope acted as cushioning so sailors of old didn't smash so many bottles.
Polished steel "fid" and sheathe for rope-work.
A larger 19th c. sailors "Ditty" bag. Waxed linnen canvas and flax rope-work. Very fun little project.
When making the ditty bag I came across this tool called a "slungshot" which I was inspired to make. Commonly used for casting the mooring line but also handy in a bar room brawl. As a little bit of a flex I omitted the traditional "monkeys head" knot for a globe knot. Those who know know.
leather and brass measuring band with spring return
A dice cup of leather and dice of bone.
I tried my hand at making a leather tankard. It was very interesting trying to figure out how to do the stitching. Boiled in beeswax.
First turnstyle shoes I made. Replica of a medieval Visby find.
Viking age turnstyle shoes I made as a birthday present for a friend. Hungate/Coppergate 10th c. oil tan soles, veg tan uppers, bog oak buttons.
Viking beads carved from amber for my wife
Frank from Donnie Darko. Made it for Halloween many years ago.
His name is Jürgen. I made him from an apple and gave him to a friend
One of those annoying projects that I made too well. It's so crisp I've had people tell me they don't believe I made it.
I got to try my hand at pottery in a friends shop.
A bag of abstract games
A vikingified game of hive and my favorite abstract game "nine mens morris"
