Hi, I’m a surface designer!

First question I always get is: “what in the world is that?” I’ll be delighted to tell you.

Quick, boring answer: I make cars.

If that is a lackluster answer, hopefully the rest of this site will help illuminate my role in the process. The purpose of the site is for me to use both professionally and for curious friends and strangers. At the top of the page you can find the different sections of this site.

Surface design is a computer aided design (CAD) process intended to produce high quality digital models that have a complex structure. Since the job is quite niche it hasn’t really got an established name worldwide. It is also frequently called computer aided styling (CAS), digital sculpting or in Sweden, where I reside “formbestämning”.

The work is done in tight collaboration with both design and engineering. They supply their directions and requirements and I build surfaces that show off the intended design within the parameters set out by engineering. When my work is done it is sent to manufacturing to produce the tools that will make the part.

As a person I tend to be creative, inquisitive and analytical. In my opinion this makes me apt at finding the root of a problem as well as explaining abstract concepts to others. I’m a big fan of philosophy and puzzles; this permeates my love of music, literature, geometry, games and food & drink.

For my creative personal outlet I am a maker, viking/medieval re-enactor and circus artist, primarily as a flow artist.
